Ask Hector

Hector with water

Meet Hector. He's a kid who doesn't say much, but usually knows what he's talking about.

Today he's looking at water. The United States uses over 400 billion gallons of water EVERY DAY and a lot of it is simply flushed down the toilet. It takes a lot of energy to clean water and get it to your home, so wasting water is also wasting energy.

So Hector will now tell you how you can SAVE WATER AT HOME in just TEN WORDS!

Jolie

Hector, do I need to flush the toilet if there's only pee in there?

Hector

No.

Jolie

Should I turn the faucet off while I'm brushing my teeth?

Hector

Yes.

Jolie

Should we repair any leaking pipes and fix dripping faucets?

Hector

Definitely.

Jolie

Should I take long, deep baths instead of showers?

Hector

Nu-huh.

Jolie

Is the garbage disposal better than a compost bin?

Hector

Negatory.

Jolie

And what about the dishwasher or washing machine? Should I only do full loads?

Hector

Yeah.

Jolie

And, if I am using the dishwasher, you're advising I scrape dishes rather than pre-rinse them?

Hector

Righteous.

Jolie

Also, I should go easy with the garden hose as it can be very wasteful?

Hector

Affirmative.

Jolie

Was that last one a Yes?

Hector

Yes.

Jolie

If I do all that will I save both money and water?

Hector

Absolutely.
